IS GEOMATICS AND SURVEYING A CHALLENGING FIELD FOR GIRLS?
I would not want to say Geomatics and Surveying is hard and I will not say it's easy too. Geomatics and Surveying is one of those fields we find more men than women. The reason not being that it's challenging, NO!
The first reason is that most people do not understand what Surveyors do, their roles in the society, their importance and the work they do particularly.
The second reason is because of the first reason ( Zimbabwe specifically). Simply because a few understand what Surveying is all about, the probability of a High School student knowing about this discipline and developing interests in it is very low.
Geomatics and Surveying is a very interesting discipline for women. It is very broad and one has got many options to choose from when it comes to specialization. One can be a mine surveyor, a land surveyor ( Cadastre), hydrographic surveyor, a GIS specialist (Geographic information systems), a cartographer and so forth just because of there are many branches under Geomatics and Surveying.
Why pursue Geomatics and Surveying as a woman?
1. The industry is diversifying
2. General skills shortage across the industry means you are in demand
3. Be a trailblazer
4. Surveying is actually ahead of the game when it comes to bridging the pay gap
5. Endless opportunities for women
